Saying that Joe Biden is better choice for the left wing than DJT instead of saying they are equally bad choices for the left wing, is excessive centrism and condemnable
Republicans take 10 steps backwards, Democrats take 1 step forward. Liberal 2.0ers call that progress. Leftists like me call it a f*cking disgrace.
A lot of things that the Democrats campaign on and take credit for, were by and large grassroots campaigns by progressive groups.
For example, the DNC really fought a lot of state-wide decriminalization attempts, that's why the first legalized states had to use voter referendums.
Then you got issues like abortion and gay marriage, which were undone by the courts and NEVER codified into law by the Democrats, despite having many opportunities to do so.
The DNC are NOT allies to us leftists, they are dangerous.
Perhaps the Democrats are more dangerous than the GOP, since the Democrats take up the space of a left party, while they ignore grassroots leftist organizing and groundswells at the same time
The Democrats ignored Occupy Wall Street, BLM, and they openly antagonize the Bernie Sanders Movement.
The Democrats are Progressive Movement destroyers, they are very much more successful at destroying Progressive movements than the rightoids could ever dream of.
When Ron DeSantis wins in 2024, we will see that we would have truly been better off electing DJT in 2020.
They took all that anger, momentum, all of those house spent waiting in line on election day and donations....and they flushed it down the drain ...for what?
What did we get? We won the house, the senate, and the executive...and got nothing. They are anti-activists, they are Movement suppressors.
While others may provide a better broad overview, a simple recent example of Democrats and Republicans being on the same side is the tax rates under Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
In 2017, Trump's tax reform package permanently cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, resulting in a significant transfer of wealth to the capitalist class.
Biden's tax reform proposed to increase the tax rate back to 28% (only undoing half of the damage Trump did), which was deemed so unreasonable by the centrist democrats that they compromised and failed to pass an increase to merely 26.5%.
This behavior is the typical pattern for the Democrat's mode of governance; just take a look at the history of how the top marginal tax rate in the US fell from over 90% to just 37% over the past 75 years. The Democrats can't even be bothered to undo the damaging legislation the Republicans pass and certainly have no interest in making any progress further left.
Well DJT did put migrants (mostly illegals) in cages. Yet former President Barack Obama's administration betrayed illegal migrants by deporting more illegals than of any administration,
White Democrats didn’t give a damn about migrants back then and they certainly don’t give a damn now. So for working class and poc they have to choose whether they want to be treated like *** with a smile or be treated while being called a racial slur.
I have utilitarian leanings (like Vaush) and unlike Vaush i still would have a hard time voting for Joe Biden
With the US electoral system, it's not possible for leftists atm to be represented above the state level. This means that you either must destroy the Democrats and replace them with a better alternative or take the Democrats over (which i both don't regard as a pragmatic scenario) or you gotta force the Democrats to form a coalition between liberal 2.0ers and leftists. Now, that's definitely do able, we've seen that the Republicans have caved in and accepted a coalition with the Alt Lite/Hard Right and Right Wing populists after losing to Barack Obama twice.
For this to take place, though, you need to exert a pretty bit amount of pressure on the Democrats. They are obviously entrenched in their neoliberal position, and deeply at that. Which means they won't give in if you simply ask enough times, you need a lever. And that lever is not being able to win elections without support from the left. Which is a lever that can merely be applied if the left is willing to withhold support if they are ignored.
It's as simple as that. The only other options are to actively participate in your total domination by neoliberalism for all of eternity, which i think is what a pseudopolitical market socialist like Vaush is naturally in favor of since he just loves the taste of shiny bourgeoise boot that much - i'm not kinkshaming here, you should just know what you're in for if you go down that route. Or you resort to the option of hoping to get a leftist candidate nominated in 2024. Which will be outright impossible if Joe Biden is incumbent, btw.
So yeah, if you go about this in a utilitarian way, it may be somewhat myopic to only run with Vaush's line of reasoning. What he's proposing may be the utilitarian politics equivalent of taking one marshmallow now because you're a child without self control who doesn't want two marshmallows later. You're free to decry this as the privileged attitude of somebody who doesn't have to live under Trump, fair enough.
I mean that without any sarcasm or cynicism. I'm being truthful here. I get that Donald Trump is actively trying to erase you, not metaphorically, but as in "making it a lot more likely that you get murdered" if you're, for example, trans or latino, and i have nothing to say against your decision if things are bad enough already that you have to prioritize short-term harm reduction over long term substantial improvements because it's simply a matter of survival
I also get it when you'd simply vote for Biden because Trump is an irresponsible madman who has sat on his bloated ass for three months instead of preparing for the health crisis in 2020, I think that being quite likely responsible for the avoidable death of tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people in the US, he is delivering a quite convincing display of total ineptitude rn. Biden may have fared better under the same circumstances, even if it would be mostly for being docile enough to listen to his own goddamn experts in the same situation. As an outside observer, i cannot realistically judge how bad things are already for you guys. My impression is that they are pretty bleak, though. I completely understand when this all is a tough choice for you.
The thing is, i believe that neoliberalism will kill millions, displace billions and generally turn the lifes of most people more and more into unbearable, slavish drudgery if we don't stop it. Simultaneously, i believe that the possibility of long term substantial improvements is there, that we are in fact at a watershed for the future of the left, but only if you're willing to make sacrifices for it that are greater than holding your nose while pulling a ballot in November.
